Phonics and Spelling

At our school we use a programme called ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics. This programme is started in the Foundation Stage and continues throughout KS1.

Within the English language there are 26 letters of the alphabet and 44 phonemes (sounds). Many phonemes are represented by two or three letters working together to make one sound. Letters and Sounds introduces all 44 sounds and teaches children how to ‘de-code’ new words they see and hear by blending sounds to read and segmenting them to spell.

As the children move into KS2, the No Nonsense Spelling programme is used as a guide for the teaching of spelling. The programme breaks down the curriculum requirements into termly overviews with individual lesson plans and resources.
